Double Gum Time

Monroe_pudgeNo doubt it was Gum Time tonight. I had two packs in. They had me miked up for the broadcast. Skip nominated me to get miked up for the game tonight. I don’t know how much coverage I had out there. I think I was the only one to throw it in, but down 3-1, why not? So I threw in a couple packs, get a little rally going. They actually weren’t in my mouth. Half of the gum was hanging out of my mouth. It was pretty ugly.

Anyway, we kept it going, got four big ones right there. That was a big part of the game. It swung the momentum and then we held on throughout the rest of the game. It was big.

To be honest with you, with the excitement of winning the game and the emotions you go through in a game like this, obviously we’ll enjoy the flight back. And I think guys will get tired. We’re going to have to try to find a little rest, because getting in at 5:30 in the morning is not going to be fun, especially with a 4:30 workout tomorrow. It’ll be kind of a quick turnaround. Hopefully we can get back on a sleep schedule. They’ll sleep quietly.

The one thing about Justin Verlander is he stayed aggressive, especially in a couple tough situations. I know they got four runs on him, but he stayed aggressive. Sometimes your line doesn’t necessarily reflect how you pitch, but the big thing was where the momentum could’ve swung, he stayed on top of it, which is important. I think the big thing was after the four runs that we scored, he put up the goose egg and made sure that the momentum stayed with us. If you go out and score four after you’re down by two, and then you go right back out there and give something up, that can really kill something.

Certainly was a great game! I thought the team responded great, as this was the first time in a while that the opposing team put up a decent offensive showing.

I got tickets to game 3 and 4 my man! Got any tickets for 5 I can borrow?! I’ll be packing my snowsuit!!!! GOOOOOOO TIGERS!

Grrrreat Game! Was Verlander wild or were all those brush backs part of the plan 😉

Yep grindline dress warm, everyone wear double batting gloves and keep those bats in the oven. “I always enjoyed the vibration of the bat when the ball doesn’t hit the sweet spot” :-&

Go Go Gomez, way to step in and bring in some ribbies.

eh Jim Leyland, during the off season see what you can do next door for my Leo’s (that’s if your not Gov of MI)

Glad to have ya back home! I don’t care what the news says about winning 2 on the road and not losing the series this is far from over. Keep up the good work guys. I am still amazed at the Tigers! I am a huge fan and have pinched myself every morning all season. You are the real deal, who cares about critics!!

Keep up the hard work, and we will keep the streak alive for road teams who win the first 2 on the road. This is ours to lose now, lets stay hungry!!!

I hope we sweep so we can see you pitch game 1 in the World Series!

Welcome home and keep warm, Its snowing where I am in Michigan!

  7. harvie57@hotmail.com

What a game – two on the road! Looking forward to having you back at Comerica – cold, snow, wind and all! Keep on keepin’ on, Tigers! Your fans are loving every minute, and are behind you all the way!
P.S. I was on the phone with my best friend in WI last night during the game (I watched the Tigers win the WS in 1968 with her). Of course, she doesn’t get to watch the Tigers except in the play-offs, so she doesn’t know about “Gum Time”. When the camera focused in on you with that huge wad of BLC in your mouth, she said, “What in the world is he doing?”. After I filled her in on the history, she thought it was pretty awesome.

  8. sehugo04@aol.com

You guys are amazing. Congratulations on your accomplishments thus far. I saw the last 2 games against NY at Comerica and it was the best time of my life! I’m hoping to make it down for the World Series. Can’t wait to celebrate with you! Congrats again!

  9. roseann777@chartermi.net

My brother in Hawaii has been a loyal Tiger fan for years. He is waiting for the call that tells him he can purchase Series tickets at Commerica, and he will fly home. What a great way to visit Mom, he will take her to game. Please keep your fingers
crossed for him to get the lucky call.

As soon as I saw you had Gum in your mouth, I told my roommates that we had to pull out the chew and do it too. And we did. I had a pack and we all split it up and sure enough, we pulled ahead with the lead! So that is AWESOME!

Enjoy your day off and we’ll see you guys tomorrow night for some mass chaos in Detroit!!!!! I can’t wait!

    Nate.
We spotted your full mouth in the fourth at which time I proceeded to empty an entire packet of BLC into my mouth. It was grotesque. It took FOREVER for the gum to remotely resemble…well, gum. Syrup was roping off of my bottom lip. “Gum Time” was gag time…and then…something beautiful happened…Polanco singles, Mags singles, Pudge walks, Monroe singles, Gomez singles, Inge sac flies and I’m on my knees with my arms uplifted, praising the gum gods for imparting their wisdom to you.

    I need your help.

When is it appropriate to dispose of the gum?

Can the gum be saved and reused?

Have you tried Cotton Candy flavor?

I know you are busy, but any response would be greatly appreciated.

No mercy tommorrow night. I will be ready with my BLC and spit bucket. Bless you Boys!

Great game guys! Do you even realize the number of fans that you have? We are way up here on the western end of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and believe me, there are tons of fans around here! We support you through the bad times and now through these wonderful times! You guys SO deserve this. My children go to school with their Detroit Tigers shirts on, and my daughter is in college at Michigan Tech University and proudly wears her Detroit Tigers clothing. She had to live with comments from Yankees fans like, “The Tigers are going down!” Anyway, we are all proud of the whole team. We’ve had several inches of snow with more on the way, but we’ll just throw another log on the fire and enjoy another great baseball game Friday night. Lots of love from WAY above the bridge!

  13. jurban8459@sbcglobal.net

Thanks for bringing back the excitement of the “the only true sport left”(my age is showing)to Detroit. Bad thing is, you guys also brought back my superstition: now I can’t watch a complete game ’cause I seem to jinx you guys when I do. BIG TIME QUANDRY, huh? Again: BIG-TIME THANKS, GUYS!!! STAY HEALTHY AND PLAY WELL!!!

  14. paws-2006@hotmail.com

Thanks for bringing the love of the game back to Michigan. We love you guys and are so proud of all your accomplishments this year.
    GO TIGERS!!!!!

  15. rosenbaumjason@gmail.com

Threw in a wad of BLC during the fourth and bang, the rally kicked off. Need to pick up a couple more packs for Friday.

    Go Get Em Tigers!

Hi Nate, again Tiger fan from Puerto Rico here. To tell you the truth, I thought you guys were not going to win yesterday. My humble opinion, I saw Verlander all over the place, thank God he got a grip on his grip.. 🙂 but I was pretty worried last night. You guys came thru, GO TIGERSS…
If you are close to Zumaya, tell him to put on some aloe vera on his wrist and wrap it up with hot or warm towels and keep it like that for the sore wrist…its old fashion medicine, but my grandmother use to use it and it help swellings and soreness too. Maybe you can tell him about this…

    From Puerto Rico, with love

    GO TIGERS!!! KEEP ON ROARING!!!

Outstandable Pitching. You have shown your talent and grit since the Tigers sent Mark Redmond to Florida for you and a few others. Hope management puts the long term deal on the table for you after the Series. I have been a Tiger fan since I was a kid and have been a Nate Robertson fan since you arrived in the bigs. Congrats to you and the team.

    Semper Fidelis, and Go Tigers.

Hey Nate, Great game, and I can’t wait until you guys play the Mets in the world series. (I’ve been telling everyone that’s who’s going to play in the world series this year since April. Just wish I had put a hundred bucks on it then!!) I need a favor, don’t know if anyone could help. I have two ticket stubs from the ’72 series against Oakland, game 4 at Tiger stadium. I would love to get Al Kaline to autograph them, maybe Willie Horton too? Is there any way I could get this done? It would mean the world to me, I’ve followed the Tigers from the time I could pick up a baseball! Thanks again Nate, and keep the gum handy.

An odd benefit of losing the division on the last day will be that next year, the Tigers will be lean & hungry to win the division! Lean & hungry Tigers are bound to play better than fat & contented ones. So it should be a great season of Tiger baseball next year. (remember that the Tigers lost the pennant on the last day of 1967, and what they did about it in 1968)

But what a division it will be. Twins, White Sox, the Indians even, and over them all, the shadow of the Royals hanging over the Tigers. Wow, it’s going to be great! Go Tigs 2007!

Oh, and beat those Mets! 🙂

  20. eric@flesch.org

Looks like Zumaya’s relief pitching is too hard on his arm. Hate to say this, but for Zoomer’s long-term well-being, perhaps he should go back to being a starting pitcher (and so throw slower). Maybe he could be the Tiger’s fifth starter next year.

  21. zmanyoda@sbcglobal.net

    Lets Go Tigers!
Please keep winnig, I love you guys! Respect Oakland, they will be tough, but please wrap it up here at home. I hope we can win the seris at home. Go Tigers!

    Detroit/Michigan Loves the Tigers!

Hey man, you guys are really thriving out there. I want to thank you and the organization for putting me in the “pickle” I’m in. See, last time the Tigers were in this situation, oh, it was in 1984, my birth year. Well, the 15th of October of that year, my mom went into labor with me. Since I was 8 years old, my mom told me that if Detroit ever got back to the World Series, I had to buy her tickets. Sad thing is, I’m in GA going to college (graduation is the 29th, thank God) and she’s in MI. However, I’m going to see what I can do to get her some tickets. You guys are the truth. Preciate your guys’ performances and keep up the good work.

Hmmmmm, a possibility?? What about Maroth and in the future Colon?? Plus, management may ask Z what he wants to do. Perhaps a a 5th starter and a reliever, as that would confuse the opposition. Same for Ledezma when the Big 4 need a rest every now and then. That would allow the Tigers to pad series better in the long regular season, IOTW allow them to more easily pitch the pitchers they want to against other teams mor easily.

FIRST LET ME SAY NATE I THINK YOU ARE THE BEST PITCHER THE TIGERS HAVE AND HAVE THOUGHT SO FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS.I KNEW THAT ONCE YOU DECIDED NOT TO FINESS AND INSTEAD USE YOUR GOD GIVEN TALENT OF ACTUALLY PITCHING YOU WOULD OVERCOME YOUR WEAKNESS.EVERY ONE KNOWS YOU COULD HAVE EASILY LED THE TEAM IN WINS BUT LACK OF SUPPORT COST YOU DEARLY.LOLICH WAS THE BEST PITCHER IN HIS DAY BUT LIKE YOU HE SUFFERED BECAUSE HIS RUN SUPPORT WAS ALMOST NON EXISTANT LIKE YOURS.I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF DETROITS SINCE 1959 AND WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THEM ALWAYS.I TRY TO BE POSITIVE BUT UNLIKE MOST PEOPLE IN MICHIGAN WHO THINK LEYLAND IS A GODSEND I HOPE YOU GUYS WIN IN SPITE OF HIM.BRINGING IN PEREZ IS ONE OF THE WORST MOVES I HAVE EVER SEEN AND PUTTING HIM ON THE POST SEASON ROSTER WAS AN INSULT TO THE TEAM ESPECIALLY BIG RED AND I WISH HE WOULD HAD KEPT CLEVLEN ON THE TEAM ALSO BECAUSE WITHOUT A DOUBT HE WAS OUR BEST OUTFIELDER BARRING NONE AND I HOPE THIS DOES NOT HURT US .PLEASE CONTINUE TO PITCH LIKE YOU ARE AND AS LONG AS YOU STAY WITHIN YOUR ABILITIES I KNOW YOU WILL BE SUCCESSFULL NOW AND YEARS TO COME.BLESS YOU BOYS AND GOOD LUCK!!!

Congrats Tigers on an already great season that is far from over. I told my roomate in april that this year you guys were going to the playoffs and were going to make some noise. He has been a cubs fan for years and did nothing but tell me there was no way that was going to happen. Needless to say he will never hear the end of it. Finish of these A’s this weekend and show em how Detroit takes care of business in the World Series.

  26. anthonious@sbcglobal.net

WOW. What else can I say? This is a COMPLETE team. Everyone is pitching in (no pun intended) and truly a team effort this postseason. The Cats have found their bats, the pitchers are playing “claw ball”, and the roar has been restored in Tigertown. You guys have earned your stripes and made us lifelong loyal fans proud. I live near Cleveland and have seen a recent surge in Tiger hats as of late. Either you guys are bringing out the closet fans or the bandwagon is filling up, or both. And hey, thats OK with me. Let the bandwagoners ride along, while us true blue and orange fans are grinning from ear to ear. I think I speak for all loyal Tiger fans when I say we are tremendously grateful for the joy and excitement you have given us this season thus far. Now lets finish this off and bring home the trophy you have played so hard for this season. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to find the nearest quickie mart to pickup my pack of BLC for this afternoon’s game.

    GO TIGERS!!!!

Nate, I don’t know if you actually read this, but I had your friend as a Spanish student-teacher in 11th grade, just a few years ago. She proudly said that she had a friend, Nate Robertson, who pitched for the Tigers amongst the class and I don’t think many knew who you were then in that class. I think more people know who you are now : )

Anyways, please tell her I said “Hi!” the next time you see her (S.S.) from Dave J. in Ms. Comport’s Spanish class…if she still remembers me.

Oh, and EAT ‘EM UP TIGERS, EAT ‘EM UP!

    ~Dave

Nate, you’ve brought new and wonderful meaning to chewing gum. You’ve also brought a lot of meaning and happiness to this Tiger town. Bless you and all the rest of the boys for the rest of this season. Thanks so much for all the fun and great memories this baseball season. I’ve always been a Tiger fan and always will be.
Good Luck tonight and tomorrow and in the World Series. GO TIGERS!!! YOUR’RE ALL MY TIGERS!!!

It’s almost like all the “Sports Experts” work for the NY Times & our Tigers are the Republicans in an election cycle! Man I love this season!

Of course I am refering to all the expert analysis before each of the previous two series started. Then the analysis & excuses that are made for the other team losing which almost never include the Tigers being a great team.

I won’t jinx it by saying so but it sure looks like we are headed to the Big Show.

Thank You Nate! You are filling your fans with pride this year! We are proud of you and your team mates!
